Dina

I am the University of St Andrews' first ever Chair in Film Studies.

Originally from Bulgaria, and having worked later on in Canada, US and England, my background is in philosophy and aesthetics. I have been involved with cultural and media studies since 1986 and with film studies since 1993. Many of my publications are in the area of Eastern European and Balkan cinema.

In more recent years, I have been working also on issues of transnational cinema, on the cinematic traditions of non-Western cultures, on cultural industries, on the transnational dynamics of culture and film, on film and history, on international cinema and identity, on Indian film, and on film festivals: all areas in which I would be happy to supervise PhD work.

I maintain a cinema blog at www.dinaview.com. I post on issues related to films and film festivals.

Current Research

In the period 2007/2008 I was on sabbatical leave. During this time I was working on a variety of projects, ranging from contributions to several edited collections to writing a monograph on film and history. I edited the Film Festivals Reader and co-edited the collection Cinema at the Periphery. I was based mostly in Paris, France, but also traveled to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Toronto, Montreal, Austin, and other places in connection with my research. I also launched several large scale research applications, which I expect to bring the means to allow for new funded PhD studentships.

Research Students

Currently I participate in the supervision of research students working on Balkan cinema, the representations of Russians in international film, and early cinema in Istanbul. I am the Department of Film Studies' coordinator for postgraduate matters.

In the next period, I would be interested in supervising doctoral projects in the following broadly defined areas: film festivals, international cinema, film industry, Eastern European, Russian and Balkan cinemas.
