AV support for dual delivery
We've installed cameras and microphones in over 100 rooms so you can deliver your class to both in-person and online students in:
Lecture theatres
Use the newly installed audience-facing microphones and remotely controlled cameras to capture all elements of your lecture, including in-person student contributions.
-
Visit the 'recording teaching' web page for Panopto guides.
Video and audio sources
When you open Panopto, you'll see the 'Primary sources' pane on the left. Select the correct video and audio devices before you start recording. Check the AV settings for your lecture theatre ahead of time, if you can.
Video
Select the camera in the room. There may be one or two options depending on whether the room is designed for tutorials as well. You should be able to see yourself and can adjust using the camera controls on the extron control panel.
If you want to use a document camera as well, select 'Add another video source' and select the WolfVision camera.
Audio
Select the microphone in the room - there should only be one option. If you speak, you should be able to see the audio bar moving.
-
Use camera controls and presets on the extron control panel to adjust the camera. In lecture theatres, you don't need to touch the camera itself.
Camera controls
If you touch the extron control panel, a new option 'Camera controls' appears on the main menu.
Camera controls allows you to move the camera angle up, down, left and right.
Presets
There are also presets which you can use to switch angles more easily. For example, option 1 capture you at the lecturn and option 2 captures the whiteboard. Check what each preset captures when you enter the class.
-
All the microphones in the room feed into the same audio source. This means that once you've selected the room system as an audio input in Panopto or Teams, every microphone in the room will capture sound. This includes the following microphones:
- lecturn
- tie-clip
- handheld
- shotgun (new)
This allows you to switch between microphones during your class without needing to adjust the audio settings on the computer.
Shotgun microphone
The shotgun microphone extends towards the audience. This means in-person student contributions will be captured during a Panopto recording, webcast or Teams meeting.
If you're holding a tutorial in a lecture theatre and would like to split your students into smaller groups during class, mute the room audio on Teams while they have their discussions.
-
Plug in the USB cable provided to connect your device to the system. For a demonstration of this, watch the video tutorial 'How to use the camera in lecture theatres' and skip to timeframe 7:27.
Once you've plugged in USB, select the room's audio and camera system when setting up your Teams meeting or Panopto recording.
-
Some of your tutorials may be timetabled to take place in a lecture theatre.
Sign in to Microsoft Teams instead
If this is the case, sign into Microsoft Teams rather than Panopto and follow the 'set up the camera and microphone in Teams' guidance.
Second camera
We have also installed a second camera in some lecture theatres so tutorials can take place there too. If you are hosting a tutorial in a lecture theatre which has a second camera, feel free to follow the 'switch video source in Teams during class' guidance. This enables you to capture the students on camera during a group discussion and return to the larger camera afterwards.

If you missed our live demonstration, you can:
- watch the training video
- read the blog post
There are also printed guides available in each room.
Seminar rooms
We've installed microphones which can capture group discussions and freestanding cameras which you can move anywhere in the room.
-
Video and audio sources
Check the AV settings for your seminar room ahead of time, if you can.
Once you've signed into Teams with your University credentials, perform a test call to check the camera and microphone have been automatically detected.
If you don't hear or see yourself on screen, go to Settings > Devices. Select the microphone and camera in the room - there should only be one option.
-
Each camera is mounted on a freestanding pole and includes a privacy shutter.
Moving the camera stand
Feel free to move the camera throughout the class. If you've pointed it at the whiteboard and online students with poor internet connectivity are unable to read it, use a pen and paper on the document camera instead.
Please don't unplug the camera so the room is ready for the next tutor.
Adjust the camera angle
Tilt the camera up and down on the pole to adjust the camera angle.
Privacy shutter
There is a silver rim around the camera lens which you can rotate to turn on the privacy shutter. This moves the red lens cover over the camera and switches the power light off.
If you've connected the camera and don't see yourself, check the privacy shutter isn't closed over.
-
To switch between the freestanding camera and the document camera, the easiest thing to do is select 'Switch video source' during the Teams meeting.
This appears over your camera preview at the bottom right of the meeting and is represented by a white camera and arrow icon.
For a demonstration of this, watch the video tutorial 'How to use the camera in seminar rooms' and skip to timeframe 15:55.
-
As the microphone capture audio within the range of the room, in-person students can stay seated during discussions.
This impacts online students as they'll hear their voices echoing in the room.
To eliminate this:
- encourage students to use 'raise hand' or Chat before speaking
- when you invite someone to speak, mute your microphone on Teams (or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + M)
- when they finish, unmute yourself
-
Plug in the USB cable provided to connect your device to the system. For a demonstration of this, watch the video tutorial 'How to use the camera in lecture theatres' and skip to timeframe 7:27.
Once you've plugged in USB, select the room's audio and camera system when setting up your Teams meeting or Panopto recording.
