RAMSEY, JAMES [SSNE 8102]
Text source
Captain James Ramsey served in the regiment of the Earl of Morton during the 1628 Ile de Rhé expedition. Both he and Captain Sir Henry Acheson [SSNE 8242] raised their companies in Ireland. However, both captains were left behind the fleet and thus probably did not fight in France. Both captains stayed in the regiment when it transferred to Sir George Hay of Kinfauns' [SSNE 5056] for service in the Dutch Republic. The regiment was contracted between March and April 1629 for a period of four months, and consisted of around 2,000 men who would go on to fight at the siege of 's-Hertogenbosch. Ramsey was killed in an assault on the Spanish defenses on 19 August 1629. His death was reported by Frederick V to Elizabeth of Bohemia. He is the only officer of Hay's regiment known to have died in the siege.
