William Lyle was an officer in the old regiment of the Scots-Dutch Brigade c. 1633-1640. He first served as a lieutenant in Lieutenant-Colonel Erskine's [8002] company in 1633. Lyle was by then a widower, but that year he married one Catharina Blecketer [SSNE 8015], a young woman from Scotland who was living in Rotterdam. Lieutenant Lyle was one of fourteen prisoners from Erskine's company taken at Calloo (Kallo) in 1638. Regardless, on 13 April 1640 he succeeded command of Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Caddel's [SSNE 8008] company. He left the company by 1 July 1642 and was succeeded by Captain John Schortes [SSNE 8016].
