Walter Murray was a Scottish officer serving in the Scots-Dutch brigade between c. 1627-1657. He began his career as a lieutenant in Lieutenant-Colonel John Halkett's [SSNE 7966] company in Sir Francis Henderson's regiment. He was commissioned as captain to William Drummond's [SSNE 8010] company (Brog's [SSNE 7842] regiment) after Captain Drummond was shot and killed at the siege of Groll c. 1 August 1627. Murray himself was wounded at the siege of Maastricht in 1632. Murray was appointed sergeant-major of the regiment before Rammekens, presumably after the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Caddel [SSNE 8008] and the promotion of Sergeant-Major James Balfour [SSNE 8009] to that lieutenant-colonelcy.

Walter Murray was promoted to lieutenant-colonel of Walter Scott's [SSNE 4997] regiment on 27 March 1655, after the restructuring of the brigade. By 1657, he retired from the service and was succeeded by George Lauder.

N.B. In 1643 Murray commanded 100 men with a salary of £1417. In 1649 he commanded only 50 men, £825, presumably because of the Treaty of Westphalia and the end of the Thirty Years' War, 1648.
