Axel was apparently one of nine sons of Albrecht Macdougal of Mackerston [SSNE 2444] in Scotland, who had emigrated to Mecklenburg (though he does not appear in Elgenstierna). Axel was a captain in Gustaf Horn's Norrland regiment in 1624. He was in Jakob Duwall's [SSNE 1623] Norrland regiment in 1625 (Jakob being a brother or half-brother). He was in Johan Baner's Norrland regiment in 1626. In 1626 he became a major  back in James Duwall's Norrland regiment. Axel was also listed at the Riddarhus that year. In 1627 he was lieutenant colonel and chief of an infantry troop in Uppland's regiment. That year he was noted in the Riksdagprotokoll. He was captured in 1628, and in August Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna placed requests with Wallenstein and Field Marshal von Arnim for Duwall's release. Wallenstein agreed and a prisoner exchange was arranged. In 1630 he was colonel for the Uppland regiment, although another source notes it as a new Norrland (Västerbotten region) regiment. He took over colonelcy from James Duwall. From 1633-34 he was the colonel of the Abo region regiment. He died either that year or in 1635 and is perhaps the man Monro notes as lieutenant colonel Macdowgall in Swedish service in 1632, subsequently killed in Swabia.
