St Modans, 3rd May 2014

University of St Andrews Staff 98/2 (21 overs) beat St Modans 95ao (37 overs) by 8 wickets
(E. Coombe 43*) (S. Frankland 2-8)

The Staff got their first win in Division 1 with a convincing victory away to St Modans.

Winning the toss, St Andrews bowled first on what looked to be a helpful pitch. Angus made the first incisions, clean-bowing their captain before removing the no. 3 next ball, Henry taking a sharp chance at slip, as Angus ended with a double-wicket maiden. St Modans then steadied the ship to progress the score to 36 off 14 overs before Phil struck twice in one over during an excellent spell of 9 overs the first of his wickets coming from Dave catching a steepler at square leg much to everyones joy/surprise.

Again a partnership looked to be developing for St Modans, with the dangerous Sultan being dropped repeatedly, before Henry was rewarded for some fine bowling with a wicket off not quite such a good delivery, Ed taking a running catch at midwicket to show how it should be done.

With the scoring rate never looking threatening Ed was brought on to try and make another breakthrough, and after some initial struggles with the very hilly approach to the crease, induced a nick behind which was taken by Dom to leave the score at 79-6

Stan and Dave then took out the last 4 wickets for 13 runs to ensure the total remained below 100 - Dave took a second catch, before ending the innings with his second wicket, to go with the two for Angus, Phil and Stan.

Chasing 96 to win, , Phil was promoted to open after top-scoring last week but unfortunately fell in the first over. Dom and Stan steadied the ship to take the score to 33 in the 12th over, although Stan was fortunate to be dropped at mid-off to rile the opening bowler, before Dom was caught at gully driving at a wide one. This, however, was to prove a blessing for onlookers as Ed proceeded to play some outstanding shots as the next 65 runs came off just 8 overs with Ed striking five 4s and two 6s before Stan made a late surge himself to finish the chase in the 21st over.

A good win after last weeks chastening introduction to the league - a good bowling performance on a helpful pitch with all the bowlers taking a wicket, with the chase sped up considerably by Ed further work needed on catching and not bowling wides
