Rossie Priory, 23rd August 2014
University of St Andrews Staff 88ao (38 overs) lost to Rossie Priory 212-5 (45 overs) by 124 runs
(J. Hey 35)(D. Miller 2-52)
The league season ended with defeat against the champions at the picturesque Rossie Estate complete with
highland cows and flocks of sheep.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, a wicket in the first over was a welcome start, Paul taking a
very good catch diving forward after Dave had taken the edge. This was to prove a false dawn, however, as
Rossies 2nd wicket pair put on 131. A burst from Phil was unfortunate to be wicketlesss, and Pat provided
a good controlled spell to keep the run rate below 4 an over but, as with most matches this season, a few
chances were dropped that could have made a difference. Josh finally broke the partnership in the 34th over
with a catch from Dave, before Jon came into the attack to remove the Rossie Priory pro Angus taking a
good boundary catch to leave Rossie at 161-3. Stan chipped in with a wicket as well before a passing monsoon
led to an early tea. After the rain had abated St Andrews were able to take one more wicket - Angus completing
a fine day in the field with another good catch as Dave finally removed the opener, before Rossie finished on 212-5.
With the rain having made the pitch somewhat sticky, Angus fell early before Josh and Stan saw off the opening
attack and put on 28. Just as Stan began to look more fluent he fell to an excellent slip catch and Tom glimpses
of his old form before being caught at midwicket. Josh and Dom took the score on to 72 with a partnership of 28
until Dom edged behind off the spinner to start an old-fashioned style collapse. Josh finally fell for a valiant
35 off 98 balls made in difficult conditions but with some excellent strokeplay towards the end.
With the top order having set the game up perfectly for Stefan and Jon to put on a 130 run winning partnership,
both proceeded to get out to the left-arm spin of the Rossie pro. Dave was the final man to go to complete a
collapse of 7 wickets for just 15 runs, the last 6 wickets adding just 6 runs. On the bright side we did improve
on the last batting effort against Rossie when we mustered just 61.
Although our league season is over, the outcome of the Forthill-St Modans game on Saturday will decide our final
position.
