Perth Doocot 2nd XI, 18th May 2014

University of St Andrews Staff 170ao (44.2 overs) lost to Perth Doocot 2nd XI 208/9 (45 overs) by 37 runs
(S. Frankland 41, G. Dalton 34*) (A. Stewart 3-44)
StAUSCC recommenced their league season with the visit of Perth Doocot 2nd XI to the hallowed turf of C2.

Winning the toss and electing to field, StAUSCC started well with Angus taking an early opening wicket courtesy of an excellent running catch from Josh, before Perth advanced to 46 without further loss. Phil then pushed one across the remaining opener to get a catch behind, before Josh took a wicket clean bowled to reduce Perth to 54 -3.

With the game in the balance a fine century partnership put Perth on top. Although Armstrong survived some early difficulties, aggressive running, and big hitting put St Andrews on the back foot on an outfield that seemed to quicken through the innings. However, 105 runs later Angus managed to open an end up by dismissing the Perth captain, sweeping at an ugly leg side wide only to be well-caught by Dom, before bowling Armstrong just 6 runs later to end with 3-44 off his 9 overs.

Dave was brought back into the attack and was unlucky not to gain reward for another parsimonious spell, going for only 21 off his 9 overs before Phil and Stan provided the death bowling options Stan taking two wickets a stumping by Dom and a catch by Angus helping him out, and Phil finishing with 2-25 off his 9 overs. A good finish to the innings, with 6 wickets falling for 45 runs, left St Andrews chasing 208 for victory.

In response another new opening pair of Angus and Dom put on 20 for the first wicket before Angus was clean bowled. Dom fell soon for 14, before Toms return from the wilds of Edinburgh was ended with a nick behind for nought to leave the staff at 29-3.

Stan and Paul steadied the innings with a partnership of 33, before Paul stretched for a particularly wide delivery and hit it back to the bowler to be caught. The start of another partnership formed with Stan and Alex putting on 26 until some over-eager running from Stan led to him being run out for 41, starting a flurry of 4 wickets for 14 runs.

With the score at 104-8 an element of despair had set in but this was soon lifted by a rousing 9th wicket partnership of 64 between Graham and Andy as they both made their way to their highest score for the club, with both a hitting a 6 apiece much to the delight of the onlookers. With Perth beginning to panic, wides started to mount up and at times five men were placed back on the boundary. Unfortunately the fun was ended with Andy lbw for 19, before Phil fell to a good running catch on the boundary to leave Graham not out on an excellent 34, and the St Andrews innings closed on 170.

Some excellent bowling from Dave and Phil to carry on their good early season form, and a fine partnership between Graham and Andy which managed to gain us an extra 2 batting points, showing that StAUSCC can certainly be competitive in League 1.
