Norwood, 9th July 2014
University of St Andrews Staff 226/5 (44.3 overs) beat Norwood 225/7 (45 overs) by 5 wickets
(S. Frankland 69, J. Hey 62)(D. Miller 2-28)
St Andrews pulled off one of their more remarkable victories as they notched up their fourth win in a
row and this time with only 8 players to move up to 5th in the table.
Dom elected to field first despite only the 8 men and a very short boundary on one side - StAUSCC would
be reliant on accurate bowling, with only 2 men on the leg-side for much of the innings, and often no-one
behind square.
After some initial attempted big hits from Shoaib, Angus made the breakthrough, with Pat clasping a catch
at mid-off and in the next over Alyn took a wicket as Norwood tried to attack the bowling. The big hitting
Shoaib then put on a partnership with Ramlingam, but the scoring never got away from St Andrews Dave in
particular bowling an excellent first spell as all the bowlers kept tight lines to make up for the lack of
fielders.
Pat bowled a threatening spell, and was unlucky not to have at least another wicket (to add to two catches)
as the Norwood no.5 was dropped at square leg before scoring, whilst Stan wheeled through an economical
spell from the other end only 25 runs coming off his 7 overs. The no.5 went on in partnership with Ramalingam
before both fell late on as StAUSCC ensured there was no acceleration in the run rate.
Excellent closing spells from Alyn, Josh and Dave saw a clatter of wickets as they proved too good for the
lower middle order and Norwood were restricted to 225 for 7 Dom dropping a sitter off the last ball of the
innings to deny Dave a third wicket as he finished with an excellent 2-28 off his 9 overs.
In response, Alyn and Josh put on 37 for the opening partnership, unperturbed by the change of wicketkeeper after
one ball, and saw off the majority of the opening bowlers spells as Norwood kept them on for 16 overs to try and
make a breakthrough. Alyn went for a valuable 14, caught as he attempted to accelerate the scoring. As some
threatening clouds gathered Josh began to take advantage of the change bowling to ensure StAUSCC were always
ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis rate including hitting 16 off one over despite cramping up. After putting on a
large partnership with Stan, Josh fell for 62 - his first half-century for the club, and with a number of excellent
6s picked up over the legside.
Graham proved once again what he can do if he survives the first ball, giving good support to Stan, and then beginning
to accelerate to ensure we kept on track before he fell for 21, attempting to hit a 2nd consecutive 6. With around 7
an over required, but with only 2 overs left from Norwoods main bowlers, St Andrews were still in a good position.
Stan fell to the returning opener for 69, after passing the 400 run mark for the season, trying to flay him through the
offside and nicking behind, before Dave perished first ball to put the game back in the balance. Dom kept his head, and
with sensible batting from Pat, took the equation down to 6 off the last over a boundary off the first ball took the
pressure off and the game was won with three balls remaining, Dom finishing on 22 not out as the rain began to pour down.
An astonishing effort all round from keeping Norwood to 225 with only 8 men and a short boundary, to making sure of
victory with our biggest successful run chase for many a season.
