Kinross-shire, 9th August 2014

University of St Andrews Staff 143-8 (45 overs) lost to Kinross-shire 164ao (39.3 overs) by 21 runs
(A. Caddick 36)(J. Hey 2-24)

A close loss in the league as St Andrews were unable to chase down another reasonable target.

St Andrews opened the bowling with Angus and debutant Luke who was unlucky on a couple of occasions as the ball just evaded the fielders in his spell. The first breakthrough was much needed as Kinross had sped to 73 in the 11th over, James Ross in particular targeting the leg-side boundary and also depositing Angus for consecutive 6s down the ground. However, Pat took a sharp catch at midwicket off Angus to dismiss Ross for 58, and Angus soon took a second wicket, meaning StAUSCC were able to put a lid on the scoring rate as Kinross rebuilt.

Josh and Stan bowled tidily despite the gusts before Pat delivered an excellent spell of swing bowling, clean bowling the attacking Robson with a perfect yorker, and causing numerous problems for the batsmen. Stan then returned from to bowl with the benefit of the wind and was rewarded with wickets to finish with 2 for 32 as St Andrews continued to chip away at the Kinross middle order.

With the return of the mythical McDougall-Bagnall to the team, cap-throwing was a given although doing so at the same time as managing to throw the ball in over the stumps was quite a feat. Some more orthodox cricket saw a tight spell rewarded with the wicket of the remaining opener Angus pouching his third catch of the innings. After some fine fielding by Josh and Stefan had resulted in two run-outs quick, accurate throws to Dom finding the batsman short both times - Josh returned to finish off the innings with his 2nd wicket with just 11 runs coming off his last 6 overs.

Needing 165 to win, Angus and Pat set a solid base for the chase with an opening partnership of 21, but the introduction of the Kinross spinners made scoring far harder between them the three spinners bowled their 26 overs for only 56 runs as the lively Kinross team began to get on top. At the halfway point in the chase StAUSSC had made their way to way to 48-2 but were soon to lose Stan as he dragged on for 20.

Josh and Adrian then combined in the best partnership of the innings - steadily accelerating as they put on 47 together with boundaries starting to come a little more freely. However, Josh fell to a fine catch on the boundary for 25 to leave the score at 106-4 with 7 overs left. Adrian and Dom pushed the score up 129 to leave StAUSCC needing 36 off just over 4 overs, but Adrian was then bowled by one that went under his attempted pull falling for an excellent 36.

At the start of the next over Dominic and James were bowled in consecutive balls as they aimed for quick runs, before Howard was run out as Stefan aimed for a particularly quick single. Despite Luke getting his first run for the club St Andrews were to fall 21 runs short.
