Kinloch 121/7 (42.5 overs) vs University of St Andrews Staff - No Result
Despite the threatening clouds and dreich forecast, our game against Kinloch began
on time on Saturday with the blessing of the groundsman. However, as we approached
the halfway point of the game, the light drizzle turned into a series of heavy
downpours and, after taking tea, 'common sense' (as Stan would call it) prevailed
and the captains shook hands on an abandonment.
Stand-in skipper Phil called incorrectly at the toss, but was delighted when Kinloch
opted to bat first, especially given our last game against this side was the
season-opening debacle of 33 all out. Al & Dave opened up, generating some considerable
swing in the overhead conditions. Before long, both had a wicket, Al clean bowling the
opener with a fast and full ball, and Dave the other courtesy of an inside edge. Phil
came on to try and sneak in a couple of quick overs with his 'left arm tweak' and was
rewarded for a tight line with a good high catch from Stan (proving catching practice
at nets does pay off) and a quicker flatter delivery accounting for two more Kinloch
batsmen. Josh replaced Al and also earned two wickets, excellent late movement away
bowling one and inducing an edge to Phil at slip for the other. The two left-handers
bowled 18-6-32-4 between them and saw Kinloch on 59-6 at one point. Stan came on at
'the road end' and continued with the tight bowling, earning a wicket with a good
running catch from Graham doing the job. The bowlers were shuffled round, but no
further wickets fell and some good late running from P. Wig saw Kinloch up to
121-7 when the rain came.
Overall, a shame the weather ruined what was looking like a competitive performance
with some excellent examples of ground fielding from all the team and some good catches
held. On to the Ferrier Cup next....
