Glenrothes, 20th April 2014
University of St Andrews Staff 184/7 (39 overs) beat Glenrothes 2nd XI 182/9 (40 overs) by 3 wickets
(S. Frankland 105) (A. Stewart 3-41, J. Hey 2-14)
St Andrews Staff XI began won a close fought encounter against Glenrothes in the first weekend game of the season.
Opting to bowl first, StAUSCC made an early breakthrough with Angus taking a wicket in his first over. This, however,
brought the free-scoring Dale to the crease who after escaping a dropped catch, went on to score the bulk of the early
runs. With the score at 40-1 off 7 overs, Angus produced two more wickets clean-bowled to wrest some initiative back
to StAUSCC. Dale eventually went after scoring 72 of the 87 runs whilst he was at the crease Angus pouching the
catch off Josh. With Phil then gaining reward for some threatening and tight bowling, Glenrothes were teetering at 97-6.
The spin duo of Stan and James then got to bowl extended spells, both taking wickets with Angus taking a second catch
of the day, as the score progressed to 137-9 and St Andrews still looking favourites.
However, the arrival of Dodds Sr at number 11 with some merry hitting off the returning opening bowlers, led to a last
wicket stand of 45 to leave St Andrews chasing 183 for victory more than it might have been from 97-6, but not
insurmountable on a good pitch and a quick-running outfield.
In response Phil and Alyn opened up with a partnership of 15 before falling in consecutive overs. With Pete offering
stability , he and Stan steadied the innings taking us to 35 off 11 overs before Pete was out. Josh displayed some nice
strokes as the scoring rate increased before hitting one straight to the field. With 64-4 off 17 overs, Dom stuck it
out at one end whilst Stan proceeded to make merry in a partnership of 77 before Dom was run out as the pair began to
push quick singles. With Lewis following soon after James and Stan upped the rate in a partnership of 29 before Stan
holed out in the deep for a magnificent 105, taking full advantage of the quick outfield in hitting 15 boundaries.
Angus, promoted to the heady heights of 9, ensured there was no wobble, allowing James to cart away a full-toss for
4 to win the game with an over to spare.
Congratulations to Stan on an excellent, match-winning century.
