Forthill 2nd XI, 27th July 2014
University of St Andrews Staff 97ao (42.2 overs) lost to Dundee High School FPs 119-9 (45 overs) by 22 runs
(S. Frankland 20, P. Pass 18*)(D. Miller 4-17)
St Andrews lost in a close game to a youthful Forthill team as our winning run came to an end.
Choosing to bowl first, StAUSCC opened up with Dave and Angus. With Graham bemoaning his lack of
catching ability at point, it was inevitable that the first chance would go to him, and less
inevitable that it was safely pouched. A diving effort for the second wicket, and a bullet throw
to effect a run-out meant he had a hand in three of the first four wickets to fall as Forthill
were reduced to 37-4.
Their middle-order proved more resolute as they rebuilt the innings - the next wicket not coming
until they had reached 72, Alex taking a sharp chance at slip off Stan as he twirled his way to
1-22 off his 9 overs. From the other end some extremely tight bowling from Alex saw just 11 runs
off his 9 over spell, taking his only wicket with his last ball, as Forthill saw off the spinners
to reach 99 for 6 with 5 overs remaining.
Phil and Dave bowled the death overs tightly, with Dave bowling a double wicket maiden in the last
over to leave the total at 119-9 James taking a steepler of a catch, and Paul a slightly simpler one.
After losing Angus early, Stan and Dom steadily chipped away at the total with a partnership of 32,
taking the score to 40-1. However, the introduction of Robertson to the attack saw a change of fortunes
as he took out the backbone of the St Andrews batting line-up, taking 4 wickets for just 3 runs in a 6
over spell as StAUSCC subsided to 50 for 6.
Graham and Pat settled the innings down with a measured partnership of 22 showing good application against
some threatening bowling, before both fell in an attempt to take advantage of the spinners Pat going to
a good catch trying to clear mid-on, Graham stumped trying to sweep one away. Phil and Stefan then also put
on 22 for the last wicket, Phil striking a 6 despite numerous boundary riders, and Stefan looking comfortable
against the returning opening bowler so much so that he attempted a glorious pull shot, which sadly deflected
onto the stumps to leave us 97 all out.
An enjoyable game which perhaps we should have won
at least Forthill were particularly complimentary about tea.
