Dundee University Staff, 2nd July 2014
St Andrews University Staff 101/3 (20.4 overs) beat Dundee University Staff 98/9 (25 overs) by 7 wickets
(D. Miller 3-12, A. Davies 2-13) (S. Frankland 29)
St Andrews retained the Ferrier Cup on a grey evening to ensure another season of
silverware.
Winning the toss and bowling first, St Andrews started with Alyn and Dave. Run-scoring
proved particularly difficult early on, although it took until the 5th over for the
breakthrough and then two came at once as Al was rewarded for probing outside off with
two nicks behind in the over, both safely pouched by Dom. Alyn bowled his 5 overs straight
through, finishing with excellent figures of 2-13, as the other bowlers were rotated. Phil
came on to purvey his left-arm spin in place of Dave and was rewarded with an early wicket.
Josh then took a wicket with his first ball as the Dundee batsmen looked to up the scoring
rate Stan taking a high catch safely in the covers - before Stan chipped in with two of
his own, Pat taking a catch at mid-off.
Dave was brought back into the attack to partner Josh in the death overs, and immediately
gained reward by taking 3 wickets in an over the first courtesy of a fine one-handed
catch by Alyn, the next two clean bowled. With the tail-end batsmen in, the last 5 overs
barely saw a run scored as Dundee stuttered to 98-9.
The St Andrews reply was generously helped along throughout by a number of wides. Alyn went
early for a swift 7 before Stan and Ross steadily went about the run gathering in a stand of
65 a marvellous straight-driven 6 by Ross the highlight. Both fell on 79 Ross bowled for
20, Stan bowled around his legs for 29. Any threat of a collapse was snuffed out as Paul and
Dom took advantage of some loose bowling to take St Andrews to victory by 7 wickets with
plenty of overs to spare.
An excellent bowling performance backed up by good catching to give StAUSCC the trophy for
another year.
