Dundee University Staff, 14th May 2014
St Andrews University Staff 71/5 (18.4 overs) beat Dundee University Staff 70/7 (20 overs) by 5 wickets
(A. Stewart 22) (D. Miller 2-4)
St Andrews beat their Dundee counterparts convincingly in the end on a sunny Wednesday evening,
again indebted to a fine bowling performance.
Delighted to be asked to field first, St Andrews started off excellently - with Dave moving the
ball in at a decent pace the Dundee batsman had no answer taking only 4 runs off his 4 over
spell, and losing both openers including Alex Anderson bowled for a duck. From the other end
Angus took a catch off his own bowling before Ed took a wicket in his first over to leave Dundee
at 23-4 off 8 overs. Ramalingam kept the score ticking along at around 3 an over, but fine catches
from Graham (for Eds second wicket) and Stan (a running effort finishing with him on the floor)
either side of Phil clean-bowling Willie Anderson kept St Andrews on top.
Josh delivered an excellent spell of swing bowling at the death, going for just 11 runs off 4 overs,
as Dundee were barely able to lay bat on ball, let alone accelerate the run rate. With Steve conceding
just 3 runs off the final over of the innings Dundee finished on 70-7 off their 20 overs.
In reply Phil and Angus took advantage off some loose early deliveries to move onto 18 at the start
of the 3rd over before Phil popped up a catch. Ed lived chancily for a brief while before his stay
was ended as the Dundee legspinner started a spell of 3 wickets in 4 balls Ed bowled, Graham well
caught at mid-on and Angus bowled sweeping after 22 runs off just 15 balls. With the Staff at 36 for 4
off 6 overs the run rate was not an issue, allowing Stefan and Steve time to play themselves in against
some very good change bowling. Stefan finally went for 9 after having done most of the hard work in
seeing off sometime StAUSCC player Alex Anderson. Andy got his eye in playing out a maiden before smashing
a 4 down the ground to ease any worries about the run-rate, before Steve finished the job in the 19th over,
ending with a well-constructed 15 not out in his first game of the season.
