St Modans XI, 12th May 2013
University of St Andrews Staff CC 128-5 (40 overs) beat St Modans XI 40 all out (22.4 overs) by 88 runs
(S. Frankland 50, A.Z. Khan 36n.o.) (S. Frankland 5 for 9)
Another 25 League points safely sewn up by St Andrews, despite the best efforts
of the miserable weather and an 'interesting' pitch which guaranteed a low
scoring encounter. St Modans won the toss and opted to bowl on a green
wicket which proved hard to score on throughout, Dom being an early victim
of a seaming delivery outside off stump - well caught by the keeper. Although
Alyn started off in his usual buccaneering style, hitting a rare boundary off
Raza - who only gave away 7 runs in his 8 overs - he was clean bowled,
followed shortly after by Tom, bringing Ahmed in to join Stan on 17-3 from
8 overs. A combination of accurate bowling and a luxuriant, damp outfield
kept the score crawling along to 50 at drinks, although Stan occasionally
broke the shackles with a selection of strong leg side shots and some excellent
straight drives. In a 77 run partnership with Ahmed, Stan brought up another
50 confirming his excellent early season form, before clattering a shot straight
to the midwicket fielder. The increasingly agitated Ahmed kept his
wicket intact despite a number of alarms and slowly came to terms with the
batsman unfriendly conditions, although forced into a series of comedic runs
as Aakash (bowled Dilscoop-ing) and Dave injected some urgency in the dying
overs. An early candidate for Champagne Moment of the season being an all run
(staggered) 4 by Dave and Ahmed. His 36 not out from 103 balls in 32 overs
ensured we reached a par score of 128-5 with the wicket looking increasingly
ragged as we took tea.
Unsure what St Modans had in the way of a batting line up, we started with
aggressive fields to our quickest bowling attack of Dave and Alyn who didn't
disappoint, producing some rapid deliveries, discomforting the opening
batsmen with bounce and movement. Runs were hard to come by which produced
two run outs - the first a candidate for What Happened Next as Dave decided
it was too easy to run out the non striker at his end, lobbing the ball to
Dom who dismissed the striker, nonchalantly watching the chaos at the other
end. Dave somehow finished his 5 overs wicketless however Alyn produced a
gem to bowl St Modans number 4 and make it clear that our total was pretty
unassailable. Phil bowled a rapid spell down wind, creating a number of
chances (none of which stuck) and allowed Stan to hoover up 5 wickets in
4 overs, courtesy of good catches from Tom, Patrick, a neat stumping by
Dom and a couple of lbw's. Sam had time for a debut over and Jon steamed
in and claimed the last two wickets to fall as St Modans subsided to 40
all out in the 23rd over. A good win against pleasant and sociable
opponents which sets us up for sterner tests ahead.
