Perth Doocot 3rd XI, 7th July 2013
University of St Andrews Staff 88ao (29.1 overs) lost to Perth Doocot 3rd XI 186/6
(40 overs) by 98 runs
(S. Frankland 31) (A. Davies 3-25, U. Pathania 2-24)
It was an unusually bright day in St. Andrews as St. Andrews took on Perth Doocot in the
league campaign.
Perth Doocot won the toss and elected to bat. Dave and Alyn started proceedings for the
home team with the ball. After a tight start to the proceedings Alyn prized out the wicket
of Mearns, caught by Stan at first slip. A steady partnership of 36 runs for the second
wicket brought Perths innings some solidity. Uday broke the partnership with a top edge
catch to Dave at short third man. Alyn continued the good work with two quick wickets in
the last two balls of his spell of eight overs.
Taylor and Nangia put on a partnership of 23 for the sixth wicket. Uday was again instrumental
in breaking the partnership as Nangia top edged to Tom running in and diving forward
from point. This was followed by 89 runs partnership between Taylor and Armstrong. Ben finally
had Taylor caught behind but the umpire signaled it as wide. But it did not cost St Andrews too
much as Ben bowled Taylor off the very next ball. That was the last wicket St Andrews could prise
out as Armstrong and Wigley carried Perth to a total of 186 for 6 wickets in their allotted 40 overs.
St Andrews chase started in a bad fashion. The first three wickets going down with just two runs
on the board. The third a horrible mix up and a suicidal single, coupled with a direct hit from
square leg caught Alyn short of his crease.
Next, Stan and Uday stabilized the innings with a partnership of 34. Stan in particular looked
in beautiful form and scored at more than run a ball. He hit 6 fours, which included a perfect
off dive through the gap between mid off and cover. The partnership was broken when Uday top
edged one to Riley. Stan and Wilson carried the team forward from there. Wilson hitting a glorious
off drive over mid off. Stan and Wilson were out with the score stuck on 48. Stan hitting one
straight up in the air to be caught at mid off and Wilson getting a peach of a delivery that
bowled him. This brought out Dave and Aakash to the middle and they put on 27 for the eighth
wicket without taking any chances. Aakash was caught playing a false chip to mid off. Patrick
was next to go, given lbw of Nangia. Ben and Dave put on a counterattacking partnership for
the last wicket. But finally Dave also top edged one to the wicket keeper of Nangia, and the St.
Andrews innings folded for 88 runs.
One positive coming for St. Andrews was the catching in the match as 4 catches were held onto in
the outfield, an improvement over last weeks fielding in Glendelvine.
A first loss in the league this year for St. Andrews but St. Andrews still hold on to the top
position with 5 wins after 6 league matches. St. Andrews hosts Dundee staff on Wednesday for
the Ferrier Cup.
