Madras Staff XI, 22nd May 2013
University of St Andrews Staff XI 124-6 (18.5 overs) beat Madras Staff XI
123-9 (20 overs) by 4 wickets
(D. Miller 47*) (J. Threlfall 2-16)
On an evening of varied weather conditions, we resumed battle with the other
august centre of learning in the town, playing a team of Staff members from
Madras College. As we slowly gathered our troops on C2 we were alarmed to
notice the Madras team kitted out in matching kit and doing something like
a warm up fielding drill. Perhaps it would not be the gentle 20/20 trundle
we had anticipated!
Angus generously lost the toss, giving Madras the chance to bat and although
Dave pinned down one end with a searching spell, runs leaked at the other
end with a mixture of extras, inconsistent lengths and some lusty hitting
from Madras' two 'pros', Trewartha and Hepburn. They rattled the score on to
72-1 in the 11th over before Stan took a good low catch from Aakash's bowling
to dismiss the dangerous Trewartha for 37. Madras' innings almost descended
into chaos with two wickets in Patrick's next over and then a run out smartly
created by Stefan leaving them 78-5 in the 14th over. James grabbed two wickets
before some hard late order hitting pushed Madras up to 123-9 courtesy of a
captain's knock of 50 (retired) from Falkland skipper Ryan Hepburn.
StAUSCC started their reply brightly with Paul clipping a neat boundary off his
legs, however he was immediately confused by a devilishly straight ball from
opening bowler Walker, bowled for 4, shortly followed by Alyn who received a
shooter which somehow failed to connect with his hoick shot to cow. Aakash was
visibly discomforted by a brisk hail storm and unaccountably fell before being
able to demonstrate the Dilscoop, leaving the match well balanced at 30-3 in the
sixth over. Dave and the well-refreshed Graham put on a solid partnership of 42,
pressurising the field and running some quick singles and overthrows. Graham was
getting settled and made 13 from 17 balls before misjudging a single, allowing
Stefan to come in and rattle the scoreboard along, making a career high 11 and
helping Dave's aerobic work out with some aggressive running. James stayed briefly
but fell to a good catch to let Stan take us home in the 19th over without further
alarms.
A very pleasant encounter with the Madras staff and a mid week victory secured at
long last!
