Largo XI, 15th September 2013

University of St Andrews Staff XI 162/3 (30.1 overs) beat Largo XI 159-7 (40 overs) by 7 wickets
(S. Frankland 46) (J. Threlfall 3-22)
St Andrews completed the season by easing to victory in a friendly against Largo to gain some revenge for the multiple T20 losses to them this year.

Having agreed to field first St Andrews opened with Dave and Angus. After an initial flurry of boundaries, Dave removed the dangerous Rintoul clean bowled, before repeating the feat to bowl H. Gillin between bat and pad, ending with figures of 2-13 off 5 overs. From the other end Angus chipped in with an lbw to leave Largo at 33 for 3 off 10 overs.

Largo consolidated with a partnership between Caton and Baddelely sr, although Pat and Baggers ensured the runs never came easy as the score reached 74 at the drinks break. After a brief foray by Stan it was James who made the breakthrough, a caught and bowled ending the 70 run partnership. After Caton retired on reaching 50, James swung the game decisively in St Andrews favour with a double-wicket maiden to leave the score at 125 for 6, and give James excellent figures of 3 for 22 off 8 overs.

Despite impressive spells from Richard and Steve, only one more wicket would fall Graham trapping the batsman lbw but the Largo innings never accelerated and they finished on just 159.

In response, Stan and Angus formed an excellent opening partnership to break the back of the chase. as they put on 87 together in 15 overs. Stan fell just short of another 50, undone by the slowness of the Largo spin bowler. Dave then came in and immediately showed good intent by dispatching his first ball for 4, before Angus went soon after for a well-made 33. Graham showed encouraging signs with some attacking strokes in a brief cameo before becoming the third bowled of the innings to leave St Andrews at 110 for 3.

Dave and Steve then began to speed up the charge for victory as the cold set in, coping with a number of bowling changes and scoring the last 34 runs in just 4 overs - Steve finishing the game in grand style with a 6 over square leg to move to 26 and bring up the 50 partnership, Dave finishing unbeaten on 31 at better than a run a ball.

A pleasing way to end another successful season in the 40 over game with 10 victories from 13 completed games.
