Largo XI, 29th May 2013
Largo XI 136/6 (20 overs) beat University of St Andrews Staff XI 132/8
(20 overs) by 4 runs
(T. Clemens 30, A. Davies 30, S. Mansell 30)
On an unusually warm evening St Andrews put up a creditable performance against
a strong Largo side, managing nevertheless to lose another 20/20 encounter. The
start was slightly delayed by a few folks arriving late and an initial assault
on the bowlers by A. Warrender had the fielders scattering to all parts (including
the neighbouring field) until some sanity was restored, courtesy of a wicket for
Alyn and a controlled spell from Angus. Largo lost their second wicket for 52 in
the 7th over and Warrender continued to hit out for an aggressive 55 as Largo
moved into the 90's, pegged back by wickets falling to Steve Hunter and Stan,
before little Alex Anderson came in an cracked a rapid 26 n.o. The inevitable
wides plus occasional lapses in the field allowed the batting side to close on
136 - not unachievable on a good hard pitch with batting in depth.
For the second time this season, Tom and Alyn got the innings off to a thunderous
start with some aggressive running and hitting against Largo's 1st XI opening bowlers.
With an impressive 68 on the board from the first 9 overs, both batsmen fell in quick
succession, swiftly followed by Ahmed and Aakash, to leave us on a shaky 74-4 in the
12th over. However, after a watchful start, Sam returned to his boundary hitting ways
with some lovely 4's and a huge straight 6, putting together an impressive 46 run
partnership with Steve whose run a ball 12 kept us in the hunt. Both fell with the
score on 120 and with 17 needed from the last two overs, Stan and Dom attempted to
scramble the necessary runs in the gathering darkness, Stan sacrificing himself for
a plausible 3rd and Dom sacrificing Angus for a diamond duck (that'll teach him to win
a match!) Inexplicably, Stefan was somehow unable to smash Hughes Gillin for the
requisite 8 off 3 balls and Largo were relieved to get home for a narrow victory.
A very pleasant match against our neighbours, all the better for the fact that frostbite
was not the major danger of the evening.
