Freuchie XI, 11th August 2013

University of St Andrews Staff XI 182/9 (40 overs) beat Freuchie XI 84/ao (37.4 overs) by 98 runs
(P. Smith 55, D. Bransden 46) (A. Stewart 3-22, J. Threlfall 2-6)

St Andrews lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a slow pitch with a particularly lush outfield.

With Dom Coates getting off to a swift start, Alyn was content to play more reservedly than usual and Dom contributed 19 to the opening partnerships of 29, unlucky to get out to the legspinner as the ball trickled back onto his stumps to dislodge the bails. Paul joined Alyn in a confident stand of 43 as they set a base for the rest of the innings, Alyn falling in the 19th over for a restrained but valuable 28 having done another fine job opening the innings. With the score at 79 for 2 at the halfway mark, Paul and Dom B kept the score ticking over, content to takes the ones and twos on offer and hitting the bad balls to the boundary as they batted the next 10 overs without alarm to take the score to 130-2. With 30 overs gone they began to up the rate before Dominic was run out coming back for a second to fall for 46 off 50 balls, and ending the partnership of 76 in 14 overs with the score 148 for 3.

The middle order came and went quickly as 4 wickets fell for 1 run with the opening bowlers brought back on. In between times Paul brought up his first 50 for the club off 71 balls, playing some excellent shots through the offside for 3 boundaries and keeping the innings ticking along before eventually being bowled with the score at 166.

A flurry of runs from Aakash, with Pat and his new bat providing support, took the score to 181 before selfless running saw them both being run out as the innings came to a close but not before Angus has scored his first run of the season.

After a tea of mammoth proportions, Alyn was still able to deliver a swift opening spell to set the tone, with excellent fielding in particular from Dom C and Stefan, making sure there were no easy runs for the Freuchie openers. Angus made the breakthrough in the 6th over, pinning Gibson LBW. In the next over Alyn got the other opener to edge a drive, Dom C taking the catch at 1st slip after Paul had done well to parry the chance up from second. Alyn finished his 5 over spell with figures of 1 for 7, whilst at the other end Angus went on to take a further two wickets, both bowled, to finish with 3 for 22 off 8 overs.

The change bowling provided no respite, with Aakash bowling an excellent containing spell, despite being hit for two big sixes. Apart from that, the batsman couldnt get Aakash away and from the other end Alex took a wicket in the first over of a 4 over spell that went for just 6 runs, Dom C taking an excellent catch off a firm drive into the covers as the fielding standards continued to be high.

With the last ball of Aakashs 6th over the dangerous Wallace was finally out for 30 a full ball striking the pads and Dom B collecting the ball short on the legside and throwing down the stumps, leaving Freuchie at 61 for 5 and St Andrews favourite for the win.

With Aakash and Alex both being taken off Stefan bowled tidily in an extended spell, but it was James who provided the threat with some good turn and deservedly finished the game with two quick wickets the first bowled and the second courtesy of an excellent reaction catch at leg slip by Stefan to bowl Freuchie out for 84.

A very pleasing victory with solid batting based around Pauls 50, backed up by an excellent display of bowling and fielding.
