Dundee University Staff - Ferrier Cup, 10th July 2013
University of St Andrews Staff 117-4 (20.4 overs) beat Dundee University
Staff 114-9 (25 overs) by 6 wickets
(A. Davies 39, S. Frankland 38*) (S. Hunter 4-8)
St Andrews took on Dundee University Staff on Wednesday evening in the annual Ferrier
Cup challenge match. The cup, played for every year since 1987, had been won on the
previous two occasions by Dundee but is now safely back this side of the Tay after a
convincing victory by St Andrews.
After some fine work by Pat to secure late call-ups, St Andrews managed to find 11
players, thanks to a debut for Michael Nott and some lengthy commuting for Steve Hunter.
On losing the toss St Andrews were asked to bowl first, with Alyn and Stan sharing the
opening honours. Although Dundee got off to a solid start reaching 23 before Alyn took
the first wicket, the scoring rate was kept in check with some tight bowling by both and
sharp fielding to back them up.
The score had advanced onto 66 before the 2nd wicket fell, as Aakash broke a bail in the
middle of an excellent 5 over spell. The pressure by the tight bowling and fielding also
began to tell as two run-outs were claimed one through quick work by Alyn from point,
and the other thanks to Pats good boundary fielding and Dom hitting the non-strikers
stumps from 22 yards. However, the best was yet to come as some excellent work from
Steve at square leg contributed to the 3rd run-out of the innings.
Steve, either side of his run-out heroics, produced one of the better spells of bowling
by St Andrews in the Ferrier Cup with a display of accurate, full-pitched deliveries,
with some deadly slower balls foxing the batsmen as he finished with figures of 4-8 off
his 4 overs three clean bowled and one high return catch that Steve was not going to
risk anyone else taking. With a wicket off the last ball Dundee finished on 114-9, a
total that seemed well below par.
In response Dave and Alyn started steadily in seeing off the Dundee opening bowlers,
before Alyn cut loose taking 11 off an over with two boundaries. With the second
change bowler going for 18 off his only over, starting with 5 wides and including a 6
for Alyn, the back of the chase was broken and St Andrews were well ahead of the
required rate. Despite this both Dave and Alyn carried on with the attacking cricket
in their partnership of 69, before both falling to catches in the outfield, Dave for
17 and Alyn for 39 off 38 balls.
With Sam and James putting on stands of 15 and 11 with Stan who looked in good touch,
the target was quickly reduced and Stan, after being dropped the previous ball, finished
the game off with another boundary to end unbeaten on 36.
A very pleasing win to bounce-back from Sundays disappointment in the league, and
another piece of silver(ish)ware for the trophy cabinet.
