Dundee University Staff XI, 16th May 2013

University of St Andrews Staff CC 136-8 (20 overs) lost to Dundee University Staff 143-8 (20 overs) by 7 runs
(T. Clemens 30) (A. Davies 1-13)

St Andrews suffered a disappointing defeat to Dundee University staff in a rare Thursday night game.

Having been asked to field first on losing the toss, St Andrews started tightly with Alyn and debutant Will bowling good lines, and Alyn in particular with good speed. Both took a wicket, Alyn clean bowled, Will courtesy of a thin edge behind as St Andrews took the early initiative.

Sam provided a good first change and clean bowled the Dundee no. 4, whilst Pat came back well to finish with 1-17 off three overs, Stefan taking a fine running/diving/kicking Alyn on the way catch.

However, all the while the Dundee no. 3 proved dangerous, pouncing on anything loose and making full use of the short boundary on one side as he made his way to 50 before retiring, although he was dropped twice during his innings.

With James providing two tight overs, Dundee were around the 90 run mark after 15 overs. Dominic then gave the keeping duties to Alyn and proceeded to claim a wicket first ball, courtesy of a catch from Stefan, in a wicket-maiden. This was followed by Alasdairs first wicket for the club, James taking an excellent catch low down in the slips. However, the last 3 overs of the innings were to go for 45 runs as the Dundee big hitters cut loose, despite Joe claiming his customary wicket courtesy of a good stumping by Alyn.

Chasing a target of 144, Tom was promoted to open with the in-form Alyn. An excellent partnership followed as the pair ran aggressively and put away any loose bowling, with numerous wides from the opening bowler also helping the total to 39 after just 4 overs. The partnership was extended to 64 before Tom was clean bowled by one that jagged back, finishing with 30 at better than a run a ball. Alyn was to follow soon afterwards for 20, victim of an extremely good return catch by Dundee second change bowler, who was to end up with figures of 4 for 14.

Sam, in his first innings for the club, had a look at the bowling before unleashing a 6 over midwicket followed by another boundary next ball to get the run rate back on track. Unfortunately three middle-order wickets then fell for 2 runs - Will out LBW, James bowled 1st ball hitting out, and Sam run-out for well-made 18 with a direct hit from point after being called through by Dom. Dom kept the chase on track with a quick 15 from 10 balls before chipping to mid-off to leave 16 needed off the last 2 overs. Despite the best efforts of Stefan and Pat to bring the target down, Joe was unable to hit the 10 required off the last ball.

A good chase of a total that was probably 20 runs more than should have been conceded, with some good signs from the batting line-up, and a good work out for the bowlers.
