Dollar 152/8 (40 overs) beat University
of St Andrews Staff XI 134/8 (40 overs) by 18 runs
(S. Frankland 4-17, A. Basu 2-51) (S. Frankland 32, H. Wilson 26)
St Andrews travelled to Dollar for a friendly on Sunday as the England team
attempted to throw away the first match of the Ashes.
After winning the toss and choosing to field, it was somewhat of a disappointment
that the hard, cracked pitch was in fact another slow and low Scottish wicket.
However, with Alyn making an early breakthrough and Phil returning to action
with some parsimonious bowling St Andrews made a solid start, and Henry came
on to take a wicket lbw his first over to leave Dollar at 27 for 2.
Dollar then started to accelerate the rate, with Aakash being the main one to
suffer as he was hit for four consecutive boundaries, and a score of over 200
looked possible. Henry continued his fine spell of 7 overs for 35 runs during
this period, which included Aakashs customary dropped catch off a high chance,
and Stans introduction brought much needed reward with Symington clean bowled
for a rapid 45.
With an end to bowl at Stan and the returning Aakash ran through the middle order,
Michael taking a comfortable catch off Stan and then Stan taking an excellent
caught and bowled chance to remove Adam Buchanan-Smith for 59. With Phil coming
back to complete his 7 over spell for just 8 runs, Stan finished the innings
with a stumping off the last ball as Dollar were restricted to 152-8 off their
35 overs.
After a particularly good tea enjoyed on the balcony in glorious sunshine, Alyn
and Aakash started the reply off solidly in a stand of 23, before first Aakash
and then Alyn fell without being able to push on to a more significant score.
Stan and Stefan then put on a partnership of 28 without looking troubled as St
Andrews reached the halfway stage well placed at 69-2.
However, Stan was then undone by the slowness of the pitch as he pulled a catch
to square-leg to end his innings on 32 and leave St Andrews on 71-3. With Michael
unfortunate to get a good one first up, and Stefan following soon after, Dominic
and James sought to rebuild the innings before Dominic was lbw trying to work
one to leg.
James and Henry then put on the highest partnership of the innings James providing
excellent support as he moved to his best score for the club, with Henry playing some
superb shots and both contributing with some good aggressive running to keep the
target just about in sight. Unfortunately Henry was caught on the boundary in the
last over, and Richards debut ended bowled off the last ball of the innings to leave
St Andrews 18 runs short, and James stranded on 18 not out.
An enjoyable days cricket, with an excellent tea and good beer afterwards which made
the defeat far easier to bear.
