Largo CC, 27th April 2011

Largo 76-9 (20 Overs) beat University of St Andrews Staff 30 all out (14.2 Overs) by 46 runs (Frankland 2-6, Bransden 2-13, Miller 2-19)

St Andrews travelled to Largo on Thursday for a 20-20 friendly that was very much a game of two halves.

With a bowling line-up shorn of many regulars, losing the toss and fielding first was not the favoured option. However, Dave stepped up as opening bowler and contributed a fine spell, removing both Largo openers, including their overseas amateur, to finish with figures of 2-19. With Pat and a Largo loanee (playing to make up our numbers) bowling economically, the score was 36-2 off 8 overs.

Dominic then bowled the Largo no.4, before Anil did the same to their top-scorer and 1sts captain to leave them, at 45-4 with little batting left. With Dominic picking up a caught and bowled to finish his spell with 2-13, as well as effecting a run-out that would have embarrassed even Stan, it was left to Stan and James to finish off the innings with spin as the last 8 overs went for just 14 runs. Stan took 2-6 and James a deserved wicket thanks to Paul's 4th stumping in just 3 matches.

With a total of 77 required to win, St Andrews started the reply with a confidence that was soon to be shattered, crushed and stamped upon before the end of the 6th over. After losing Paul in the first over the rest of the batting line-up followed in a procession in a spell of 5-6 from Largo's opening bowler, including 3 wickets in an over to leave us at 14-6. Unfortunately, we fared little better against the change bowlers and were soon 16-8 before the end of the 8th over. Some late resistance from Anil and our loanee player, plus the assistance of wides, meant we ascended to the dizzying heights of 30 before the final wicket fell.

A disappointing batting performance when a win was there for the taking, but at least we have the chance of revenge with a second match against Largo on 11 May.
