Largo CC, 12th September 2010

St AUSCC (105 a.o., D. Bransden 26) lost to Largo CC (128 a.o., P. Pass 2/17) by 23 runs

St Andrews welcomed Largo on a sunny Sunday afternoon that unfortunately resulted in another loss for Dom's stand-in captaincy regime.

On winning the toss, St Andrews chose to field first to make use of a strong bowling line up. With Baggers and Angus opening tidily, if not with immediate threat, it was the renowned leg side full toss that brought the first wicket - Anil taking the catch at square leg off Angus' innocuous delivery. Angus then decided to show he could also take wickets with good balls by clean bowling the Largo number three.

With no further wickets falling, Phil and Pat were brought on to both bowl their full quota of 8 overs. Phil bowled with good pace and a tight line to an attacking off side field and got the third wicket courtesy of a sharp catch at gully by Dave. His second wicket came courtesy of a skewed pull shot straight back into the bowlers hand as he finished with 2-17. At the other end Pat also took two wickets, both clean bowled, displaying the virtues of bowling full and straight.

Largo were left at 80-6 off 27 overs and St Andrews were looking to wrap up the innings quickly. With Dom having taking up the gloves after 20 overs Andy was released to bowl in tandem with Dave until the end of the innings. Bowling with good variation and turn, Andy soon had his first wicket stumped and was unfortunate not to add another as he saw a nick from the Largo number five, Alex, spilled behind the stumps. Alex continued to accumulate watchfully until run out for 29 whilst his partner at the other end hit a quick fire 17. Andy took the last Largo wicket at the end of the 40th over - the fifth batsmen to be bowled - to leave St Andrews chasing 128.

In response, Phil and Dave opened up watchfully and progressed to 25 in the 11th over before Phil skied one trying to up the run rate against the change bowlers. Dave, caught behind for 5, and Vikash clean bowled, fell soon after to leave St Andrews 43-3 off 18 overs with the run rate required up to 4 an over on another particularly grassy outfield. Negotiating some big spin from our regular nets bowler Alex Anderson, Andy and Dom built the biggest partnership of the innings(although only 26 runs) before Andy was hit plumb in front for 20 to leave St Andrews needing 60 runs from the final 14 overs. With some quickly scampered singles, Tim scoring his first runs for the club, and Dom beginning to attack the bowling the target was down to 42 off 10 overs before Dom went for an overly ambitious hoick and was clean bowled for 26.

Despite Tim beginning to look comfortable at the crease, and stout resistance from Pat, the return of the opening bowlers saw the last 5 wickets tumble for 18 runs - although Jon showcased his shotmaking skills on his way to a season high score.

A disappointing result in a game that was there for the winning after a good bowling performance.
