StAUSCC (160 for 9, D. Miller 63) lost to Glasgow Uni. Staff (161 for 4) by 6 wickets The 2010 cricket season commenced with the pleasant surprise of a warm, sunny day, and the all too familiar taste of defeat… Batting first, St Andrews made a quiet start before Dominic collected the first duck of the season slicing a long hop straight to a fielder. Stan soon followed back to the pavilion (although not into it!) with the first LBW of the season. After this poor start against some friendly bowling it was up to captains new and old, Tom and Dave, to steady the ship. After motoring along to 55 for 2 off 11 overs things were looking a lot rosier so Tom decided to take a break and ‘Retired with nosebleed’. Upon resumption at the fall of the next wicket he was stumped for 20 which preceded a flurry of wickets, including Dave’s resistance being ended for an invaluable 63. At 111 for 7 it was asking a lot of the tail to provide a competitive total, but thanks to a fine partnership of 48, the highest of the innings, between Patrick (25) and debutant Richard (19) we posted a score of 160 for 9 from our full allotment of 40 overs. A remarkably good pitch for this time of year, combined with a quick outfield, meant this would be still be a difficult total to defend, and we were lucky to benefit from some poor fielding and numerous dropped catches by the Glasgow team. After a picnic-style tea, Tim picked up his first wicket for the club in the first over, clean bowling the Glasgow opener. This bought the classy number 3 to the crease and he set about the opening bowlers, though not without a few beating the outside edge from Tommy. A double bowling change saw Dave and Stan combine to try and stem the runs, and take some wickets. Dave got the remaining opener to drag on, and then removed the number 3 with a special St Andrews full toss which Lewis held onto safely. Stan eventually got reward for a tight spell and on another day could easily have finished with more than one wicket. Baggers was also unfortunate to end up wicketless after an impressive spell towards the end. All in all a fairly competitive game where more runs on the board would have given us a good chance of victory. A special mention to Dave for his highest score for the club as well as two wickets.
