Match Report - Almond Valley, 30th August 2009

StAUSCC (127 for 3, M. Robertson 73 n.o., S. Bruce 2/48) beat Almond Valley (126 a.o., J. Mckenzie 41, J. Threlfall 2/10) by 7 wickets

A very refreshing win on Sunday against Almond Valley was a fitting final game for Club stalwart Alex Smith. Bowling first on a decent pitch a weakened AV side moved steadily to 33 before the first wicket fell, a nice catch from Lewis off Patrick's leg side long hop. Chetan came on to bowl a fine containing spell picking up figures of 8-1-19-2, his first wicket courtesy of a lightening fast stumping by Mark. AV were never allowed to settle into partnerships as Dave then Alex rolled over the middle order. The primary threat came from John McKenzie who thumped his way to a swift 41 before being run out going for an optimistic second run, waylaid by Chetan's boundary throw. James Threlfall came in to blast away the tail, taking 2 wickets, with the final AV resistance crumbling to Lewis's lethal leg spin.

A solid fielding performance all round left the relatively safe target of 127 to win. However, it always helps to have a class act in the team to do the hard work and another splendid knock of 73 from Mark Robertson showed us all how the game should be played! Mark was accompanied much of the way by Alex whose demands to open the innings were finally proven justified with a truly Boycott-esque 11 from 23 overs! A quick cameo from Dom moved us past 100, allowing Chetan and Mark to finish proceedings in fine style.

So farewell then to Alex who has been a great servant of the Club over the years and will be missed as he leaves tranquil St Andrews for the bustling metropolitan turmoil and bright lights of Newcastle-under-Lyme. Leaving us as well will be Faaiz and Mark who departs with a Club career batting average of over 200 - which may be tricky to catch! Best of luck to them in their future endeavours.
