Much to everyone's surprise we had a rather successful outing at the Cupar 6's on Sunday. With a scratch team of Sid, Eric, Roy, Deepak, Phil and Patrick we had been invited to make up the numbers after Glenrothes pulled out and were anticipating tricky times ahead when we turned up to face Cupar Firsts and Rossie Priory Firsts, grumpy Aussie wicketkeeper included.
In our first game we batted against Rossie, scoring 65ish off the permitted 5 overs with Sid starting as he meant to go on, scoring a rapid 30 at which point he was compulsarily retired. Despite the rain, Angry Aussie managed to produce several laughs by giving Roy a lecture on how batsmen should walk if out - pots and kettles came to mind! Although Rossie tried to hit out, our bowlers held the scoring rate down admirably with Eric's new found role as opening bowler particularly impressive. As the rain teemed down, Rossie fell short with two run outs in the last over, courtesy of Roy and Phil and we had our first win on the board.
Second up were Cupar, the hosts, who had thumped Rossie first time out and seemed confident in setting us a total of 75 to win, a target which was chased in brutal fashion by Sid and Phil who both retired out past 30. Even in such a short span of a game, we still managed a rapid batting collapse towards the end as Cupar tried to blast us out with their quick left armer but with only a handful of runs needed off the last few balls, Deepak and Patrick saw us home and into the final.
The final saw us pitted against Freuchie, the defending champions and although the rain had abated, the ground was soaking and the ball like a bar of soap. With our bowlers tiring somewhat, Freuchie amassed 94 although not before Eric had clean bowled their huge South African batsman, much to his displeasure. Sid and Phil once again opened with gusto but once Phil was rather surprisingly dismissed run out, the run rate climbed despite Sid crashing two huge pull shots over the boundary, one of which hit the mature trees 2/3 of the way up and carried in to the College grounds where it may still be rolling. Once he had retired having contributed over 100 runs in the day, the run chase became rather academic and Freuchie ended as worthy winners but a good day was had by all. Cupar were very welcoming hosts and we hope for an invitation (and better weather) next year.
