2011: Making Faces

The theme chosen for 2011 was 'Making Faces’ to link with the University’s collection of portraits. Winning entries were shown at the Gateway Galleries between 4 June and 31 August and also feature below. Although the 2011 competition is now closed, you can find out more about this year’s theme on this website.

Making Faces

For ever and a day artists have studied, drawn, painted and modelled the human figure. Pupils were asked to examine artworks from the University’s collection of portraits and consider how the artist has told us about the person depicted. They then used them as a starting point from which to create a 2D or 3D artwork depicting a person. A total of 421 entries were submitted and 588 pupils from schools across Fife took part in educational workshops with museum staff. It was great to see everyone gaining inspiration from the collections!

Prizes were awarded in each of the six competition categories:

  • Category C - Primary 4 to Primary 5
  • Category D - Primary 6 to Primary 7
  • Category E - S1 to S3
  • Category F - Special Education Schools/Units


Entries were judged on:

  • Originality and creativity
  • Confident handling of materials
  • Boldness and impact
  • An obvious link to collections at MUSA

The judges were impressed by the standard of all of the artworks and awarded Special Merits to 20 additional pupils.
