2010: Close Up - Far Away

Sponsored by the Vettriano Trust

The theme chosen for 2010 was 'Close Up – Far Away’, to link in with the University’s collection of scientific instruments. Winning entries were on display at the Gateway Galleries between 15 May and 19 June 2010 and also feature below. Although the competition is now closed, you can find out more about this year’s theme within this website.

Close Up - Far Away

Microscopes and telescopes have helped us explore the world, from the depths of the ocean to distant stars. Pupils were asked to look closely at the objects and artworks displayed in MUSA and create a 2D or 3D artwork from an unusual perspective. A total of 336 entries were submitted and 501 pupils from schools across Fife took part in educational workshops in the museum. It was great to see so many new visitors in MUSA!

Prizes were awarded in each of the six competition categories:

  • 2010 winnersCategory A - Nurseries
  • Category B - Primary 1 to Primary 3
  • Category C - Primary 4 to Primary 5
  • Category D - Primary 6 to Primary 7
  • Category E - S1 to S3
  • Category F - Special Education Schools/Units

Entries were judged on:

  • Originality and creativity
  • Confident handling of materials
  • Boldness and impact
  • An obvious link to collections at MUSA

The judges were impressed by the standard of all of the artworks and awarded Special Merits to 11 additional pupils. A list of all the winners and images of their work can be seen below.
