Young Artist Award

2009: My MUSA

The MUSA Young Artist Award is an annual art competition for schools in Fife. It aims to recognise and support creativity in schools, and to promote learning, using the University’s museum collections as a starting point.  The theme for 2009 was ‘My MUSA’.  Winning entries can be seen at the Gateway Galleries between 9th June and 30th July 2009 and also feature below.  Although the competition is now closed, you can find out more about this year’s theme in the linked pages.

For this year’s MUSA Young Artist Award, to introduce the new Museum of the University of St Andrews (MUSA) to pupils throughout Fife, pupils were invited to create a 2D or 3D artwork inspired by MUSA and the collections displayed there. A total of 264 entries were submitted and 398 pupils from schools across Fife took part in educational workshops in the new museum.  It was great to see so many new visitors in MUSA! 

Prizes were awarded in each of the five competition categories:

  • Category A - Nurseries
  • Category B - Primary 1 to Primary 3
  • Category C - Primary 4 to Primary 7
  • Category D - S1 to S3
  • Category E - Special Education Schools/Units


Entries were judged on:

  • Originality and creativity
  • Confident handling of materials
  • Boldness and impact
  • An obvious link to collections at MUSA


The judges were impressed by the standard of all of the artworks and awarded Special Merits to 10 additional pupils. A list of all the winners and images of their work can be seen below.
