2008: The Garden of Secrets

The theme for 2008 was 'the Garden of Secrets'. The University teamed up with the St Andrews Botanic Garden and invited pupils to create a 2D or 3D artwork inspired by any aspect of life in the garden. A total of 427 entries were submitted and 650 pupils from schools across Fife took part in educational workshops – nearly double the number who participated the previous year! Prizes were awarded in each of the five competition categories:

The judges displaying selected entries

  • Category A - Nurseries
  • Category B - Primary 1 to Primary 3
  • Category C - Primary 4 to Primary 7
  • Category D - S1 to S3
  • Category E - Special Education Schools/Units

Entries were judged on:

  • Originality and creativity
  • Confident handling of materials
  • Boldness and impact

The judges were impressed by the standard of all of the artworks and awarded Special Merits to 10 additional pupils and an additional prize was awarded by BBC Scotland’s Beechgrove Garden. A list of all the winners and images of their work can be seen below.
