Logic is the art and science of Human reasoning. The science has a history going back at least 3,000 years, and this term you will be studying a tiny fraction of it. In order to acquire a sense of what this ancient science is the science of, you need to practise the art.
Hence Fantasy Logic League, a weekly competition in the art of logical deduction. There will be substantial prizes, presented on Tuesday of Week 8 at my lecture. Since this is Oxford, the prizes will no doubt be liquid. Entries are invited from individuals or teams, entered anonymously, as per the tradition, under a Fantasy Name.
Hard copies of solutions to my pigeonhole in Balliol by the appropriate deadline, please. Which is High Noon on the following Sunday, until further notice. Model solutions, comments, advice, league tables and the next week’s problems will be published on this site shortly afterwards. The first round will be a practice round, wherein you will be encouraged to produce the kind of elegance we seek. Then the competition kicks off.
Marks will be awarded for accuracy, brevity, elegance and wit. The editor’s decision is final.
