Module description
This module provides an introduction to the development and transformation of the British state in the three centuries following the 1707 Treaty of Union between Scotland and England; it further assesses the evolution and eventual dismantling of Britain’s overseas empire in the same period. In doing so, the module introduces students to a range of historical perspectives and historiographical debates, addressing questions of political, intellectual, economic, social, cultural, and environmental history. The module is divided chronologically into three sections, with each considering developments within the Scottish, British and imperial contexts.
