Module description

This module, designed to follow on from GK2003, offers a carefully balanced combination of literary and linguistic study. Students will study a diverse range of ancient poetry in the original Greek, starting with Homer's Iliad. It then introduces students to key genres of the Greek poetic tradition, including lyric, elegy and drama. Classes will cover both detailed study of the set texts in their cultural context and linguistic/translation exercises designed to enhance students' knowledge of Greek.

  • Identify key genres of ancient Greek poetry and representative texts
  • Describe key features of these works, including their language, contents, narrative technique, literary style and (in the case of drama) stagecraft
  • Demonstrate expertise and skills in translating, analysing and interpreting these texts
  • Apply these skills to other, seen and unseen, Greek texts
  • Analyse and critically evaluate published research
  • Devise coherent and critically aware arguments on key aspects of Greek poetry on the basis of a thorough analysis of the primary text and the evaluation of published scholarship
