The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

Module description

In this module, you will explore topics central to gender studies using interdisciplinary methodologies with a special focus on the social sciences. You will learn how to critically examine current issues and controversies surrounding gender. You will deepen your understanding of the inextricable connections between gender, class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, inequality, and power.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Critically evaluate, using the methods of the social sciences, current controversies surrounding gender in law, public policy, and global issues
  • Apply an understanding informed by the methods of the social sciences to a wide variety of global gender issues in academia and beyond
  • Critically articulate and evaluate how global issues concerning gender, class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, power, and inequality are analytically and empirically connected
  • Propose specific solutions to complex gender issues by drawing on a critical understanding and on a range of interdisciplinary analytical skills moulded by the methods of the social sciences
