SCOTCAT credits

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Availability restrictions

Undergraduate Students: available with the permission of the Director of Teaching only to students in the second year of the Honours programme who have achieved at least 17.5 in EC4401.

Module description

This module is designed to provide advanced-level training in econometric methods for first-year MSc Economics and MSc Economics and Finance students. Students are expected to acquire the knowledge of modern econometric theory and methods at a level sufficient to conduct applied research in economics and understand econometric techniques in published articles. The module will also equip students with essential tools required to support the empirical section of their MSc dissertations. Students planning to take the module are expected to have intermediate-level knowledge of matrix algebra, calculus and statistics.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS MUST BE IN THE SECOND YEAR OF AN HONOURS PROGRAMME, HAVE SCORED 17.5 OR GREATER IN EC4401

Intended learning outcomes

  • become familiar with the main econometric estimators and their properties
  • understand the main principles of statistical inference, know how to apply them and test hypotheses about economic models
  • be competent using Stata to read in and manipulate the data, estimate statistical models, conduct tests, and report results by producing readable graphics and tables
  • be prepared to understand and learn further econometric techniques commonly used in applied fields of economics
  • be ready to pursue further studies in econometrics
