Module description

This year-long module has been designed to provide a grounding in Persian language and culture for the students of the Distance Learning MLitt in Iranian Studies. The schedule is flexible, and the teaching involves applied language work with passages from contemporary texts, selected for their relevance to the understanding of contemporary language, politics, culture, and thought in Iran.

Intended learning outcomes

  • To be competent in reading and translating newspaper articles on contemporary topics
  • Converse and engage in discussion about contemporary topics related to the Middle Eastern and Iranian culture.
  • Read and translate or interpret modern standard Persian texts from news, political and social reports, bulletins, literary texts, etc. and write about these subjects in Persian.
  • Become familiar with the usage and use words and structures from a wide range of topics including parliamentary reports, social media, news analyses, and Persian literature and be able to hold conversations about those topics
  • Further develop their transferable skills in translation, interpretation, articulation of clear sentences, verbal communication and comprehension through a variety of exercises focused on these skills.
