Module description
This module aims to provide students with a good understanding of some of the key issues and methods in book history c. 1445-1830. Through the evaluation of primary and secondary sources students will develop a sound knowledge of important aspects of book history, such as the growth of a market for printed news, the development of the illustrated book, the establishment of European colonial presses, the rise of the author and new readers, and the relationship between books, print and political power. These themes will be discussed at fortnightly seminars, where students will have the chance to offer presentations to the class. Students will develop and write an essay on a relevant subject of their own choice, on which they will be assessed.
