SCOTCAT credits

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Module description

This module will focus on the fundamentals of research methods for health professions education. This includes developing an understanding of the research process, from developing a research question to ethical considerations in educational research. This module will provide the opportunity to critique, appraise and plan a research proposal. Throughout the module students will be supported to reflect on their learning. By the end of the module students will be equipped to apply their critical understanding of research methods to their own academic and/or health or social care environment. This module will be fully online with a mix of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Live synchronous teaching will be scheduled in GMT. Participants must have access to a device with internet connection, webcam, and microphone.

Intended learning outcomes

  • By the end of the module students will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of research process, approaches, and design, taking into account any ethical considerations.
  • By the end of the module students will be able to formulate a research question relating to their chosen area of interest that relates to health professions education.
  • By the end of the module students will be able to critically reflect on a range of research methods, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods of data collection and analysis.
  • By the end of the module students will be able to effectively present and justify a proposed plan of research relating to health professions education.
