Module description

The aim of this module is to foster the student's acquaintance with classical Latin and to explore both prose and verse authors. The authors chosen may vary from year to year and particular attention is paid to the development of their ideas, literary styles, and genres. Students will learn about the authors set and broader themes within the module, and their progress in study of the language and interpretation of the literature will be assisted and monitored.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Identify key genres of classical Latin prose and verse of the Early Empire and their representatives
  • Describe key features of these works, including their language, contents, narrative technique and literary style
  • Demonstrate greater expertise and skills in translating, analysing and interpreting these texts against their historical and cultural context
  • Apply these skills more confidently to other, seen and unseen, Latin texts
  • Devise coherent and critically aware arguments on key aspects of Latin prose and verse on the basis of a thorough analysis of the primary text
