The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

Module description

This module introduces students to a range of short texts typically covering romanticism, modernism and contemporary literature. It helps students to develop skills in close reading, understanding of context and literary theory.

Intended learning outcomes

  • - A range of knowledge, facts, theories, ideas, properties, materials, terminology, practices and techniques about, and associated with, a English Literature (SCQF 6.1).
  • - Some of the basic, routine practices, techniques and/or materials associated with the English Literature (SCQF 6.2).
  • - Produce and respond to detailed and relatively complex written and oral communication in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts (SCQF 6.4).
  • - Demonstrate ability to produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices. (CEFR C1).
