SCOTCAT credits

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Module description

This module investigates whether psychology is a science. It does this through introducing the scientific method and the Cycle of Enquiry, and then uses material from various areas of psychology to evaluate it. The course will end with a more detailed look at the psychology of individual differences, and the various methodologies that are used to develop nomothetic theories of personality and intelligence.

Intended learning outcomes

  • - demonstrate a basic understanding of the most important areas in contemporary psychology.
  • - demonstrate an understanding of the history of psychology, the ways in which the methods of psychology have changed over time, and why.
  • - explain why different methods can be used in the social sciences generally, and in psychology in particular.
  • - demonstrate understanding the meaning of “the scientific method”.
  • - explain and discuss important psychological topics using the appropriate vocabulary and expressions.
