SCOTCAT credits

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Module description

This module provides an introduction to a broad range of business concepts and theories. It analyses the goals, processes, and operations of business enterprises. The first part of the module considers the legal environment in which a business operates and the importance of business ethics. The second part analyses the strategies and risks of a business operating in a global environment. The third part examines the use of financial information for the management of the firm. Real life case studies will be presented. The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the basic principles of business that they can develop further in their future studies.

This module engages students with the interlinked United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in the context of starting a business. It helps students to develop major competencies for sustainability such as systems thinking, strategic thinking and critical thinking. This module has been awarded the Golden Dandelion Award in 2022.
