The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Module description

The main aim of this module is to introduce students to the history and development of academic thought in both the arts and the sciences, which will enhance understanding of the key philosophical and analytical principles underpinning academic study. This will allow them to develop an appreciation of the reasoning behind common approaches and research methods, thus facilitating the transition from high school to university study. Students will build competence in a range of transferable skills, mainly the ability to balance reporting of information with analysis of key concepts and theories. This will support students in the preliminary stages of acquiring discipline-appropriate academic voice.

Assessment pattern

1.5-hour Written Examination = 60%, Coursework = 40%

1.5-hour Written Examination = 100%
