The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

Module description

This module is designed to provide students with experience of analyzing data from main UK social science surveys, reflecting on surveys from a methodological perspective and designing their own survey to address specific research questions.

  • Evaluate the usefulness of secondary survey data in general and for the purposes of specific areas of research interest
  • Understand how secondary survey data can be combined with other methods to address research questions
  • Design and implement an online survey to address specific research questions
  • Reflect on the challenges associated with specifying and achieving a suitable sampling frame and sampling strategy in survey based research
