The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

Module description

This guided study module allows you to advance your learning by undertaking a research project on an agreed topic relating to your degree subject. The project format allows you to explore a specific topic in greater depth than is possible on regular taught modules. You will gain confidence in designing and undertaking independent research, learn how to formulate interdisciplinary research questions and critically discuss research ideas, and gain experience in preparing a literature review, bibliography, or other preparatory materials for further study or analysis. As such the module serves as a useful transition between more structured taught modules and the independent research of the end of degree project. Topics will be offered by selected staff from Schools across the University. Supervision is delivered via individual or, in some cases, small group tutorials. The project topic and required reading will be agreed in consultation with the project supervisor. Students from Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Studies Masters degrees may ask to take GD5504 if their circumstances mean that the specified optional modules are not appropriate.
