Module description

The aim of the module is to enable students to examine the interaction of literature and its various historical, philosophical, cultural and political contexts in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Many of the authors we study as producers of imaginative literature also engaged in polemical, historical or philosophical writing. Literary works could make decisive and poignant contributions to particular political debates, and the literary sphere itself has its own politics. This module shows how thoroughly literature is connected to broader discursive and historical contexts globally.
